R.L. BURNSIDE: SOUND MACHINE GROOVE - Blending raw blues with soul, funk, and R&B, Burnside created a sound all his own. This album features his first recordings with an electric guitar as well as his first time working with a band. Burnside assembled the Sound Machine himself using members of his own family. The session was recorded in 1979 and 1980 by David Evans.
JUNIOR KIMBROUGH: DO THE RUMP! - Junior Kimbrough is joined here by the Soul Blues Boys, playing their unique brand of the blues. Cited by Iggy Pop as a major influence, there's no question that Kimbrough produced a sound that stood out among contemporaries and for good reason.
JESSIE MAE HEMPHILL: FEELIN' GOOD - Her first release in the United States, Feelin’ Good boasts a much rawer, grittier take on the Delta blues than her previous album, She-Wolf. Supported on most tracks by only sparse guitar and drums, Hemphill makes the covers as much her own as the self-penned numbers.

JESSIE MAE HEMPHILL: SHE-WOLF - Jessie Mae’s 1980 debut finally sees a domestic release. Included in this reissue are four remixed bonus tracks. Her version of the blues is primal and raw while staying heartfelt and enthusiastic. Dr. David Evans, folklorist and musician, contributes second guitar to most of these songs.

DAVID EVANS: MATCHBOX BLUES - A scholar, field researcher, and director of the ethnomusicology program at the University of Memphis since 1978, David Evans isn't your typical blues man. But don't worry, he doesn't let his academic pedigree prevent him from having a whole lot of fun with this ragtag set of folk-blues pieces, and the result is a delightful and lively reimagining of some country blues classics, complete with kazoos, jugs, and washboards as well as guitars and pianos. Evansdoesn't attempt to copy the original versions on any of these songs so much as he tries to reanimate them, and his versions of Booker White's "Shake 'Em on Down," Leroy Carr's "Prison Bound Blues," Babe Stovall's "Candy Man," and Tommy Johnson's "Big Road Blues" are all revelations, reminding you that the worst thing that can happen to any of these songs is that they become set in stone. - allmusic.com Steve Legget

LAST CHANCE JUG BAND: SHAKE THAT THING -Formed in 1989 in Memphis, the band released its debut albumShake That Thing (the title cut originally recorded by Papa Charlie Jackson) in 1997. In an attempt to modernize the sound for contemporary audiences, the group chose to use electric instruments (keyboards and amplified guitar) and add drums. The album is made up of mostly traditional material along with three originals (two byEvans and one by Raichelson). There is a very entertaining version of the historic W.C. Handy tune "Mister Crump," also known as the "Memphis Blues" and a positively inspiring version of the spiritual "Time is Winding Up," a traditional song that Evans learned from New Orleans street singer Babe Stovall. - Allmusic.com Keith Brown
DAVID EVANS: NEEDY TIME - [A] stellar collection of traditional-sounding songs.  While there is strength in the covers, he performs them “in-the-style-of,” rather than recreating them note-for-note, word-for-word, at a level demonstrating his reverence for the originals, while contributing his own voice and stylistic musical spin. . . With superlative vocals and guitar playing throughout, traditionalists will find Needy Time a fine introduction to Evans’s glowing body of work. – All-About-Jazz
R.L. BURNSIDE: RAW ELECTRIC - Burnside’s laconic vocals alternately bark and drawl the lyrics and many are cherry-picked from the repertoire he still exercises today. He puts the saddle on stooped warhorses such as “Dust My Broom” and “Rolling and Tumbling,” but also touching on his own coruscating variations of familiar themes of love lost, infidelity and death. Despite their advanced ages none seem the least bit atrophied. Retooled under Burnside’s brusque, cocksure delivery and the busking stick work of drummers Jackson and son Duwayne the almighty boogie is sustained. Nowhere is this more elementally evident than on the cautionary tale “Leave Me and My Woman Alone” where fuzz tone guitar and tumbling traps hammer out an aural warning sure to chill the motives of even the boldest back-door man. ALL ABOUT JAZZ

JESSIE MAE HEMPHILL: GET RIGHT BLUES - Assembled by folklorist Dr. David Evans, Get Right BluesHemphill in 1979, 1984 and 1985, and the range of blues and spirituals presented here is impressive and inspiring. Part boogie, part folk-gospel revival, part history lesson, this collection doesn't contain a single lame track, and it's amazing that none of these have been released before, since everything here is a stunner. From the ramshackle "Streamline Train" (Hemphill's version of "Mystery Train") that opens the disc through a pair of raw, atmospheric diddley bow pieces ("Little Rooster Reel," "Get Right, Church") and a hushed solo take on Memphis Minnie's "Honey Bee," Hemphill brings a ragged, perfect sense of urgency and soul to everything she touches.
